From `Awwa to Oghlu: Practical Suggestions to Support Gaza

Cairo, iumsonline.net - March 13, 2008

õEven infants did not escape the Israeli Holocaust

The secretary general of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, Dr. Muhammad Salim Al-`Awwa, sent a message on Monday, March 10, 2008 to the secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. In this message, Dr. Al-`Awwa called upon the Organization of Islamic Conference to activate its role and approve many practical means to support the besieged Gaza Strip.  Gaza has suffered a great deal in the first week of this month; the Israeli Holocaust - that left more than 130 Palestinians dead including children and newborn babies. The message includes the following:

"This is a flesh and blood letter; stained with the blood of innocent people, and accompanied by the cries of the wretched. It is signed by the corpses of women and children, so receive this letter, may Allah bless you, as Saladin received the complaint of Al-Aqsa Mosque, or as Caliph Al-Mu`tasim received the appeal of the city of Amorium."

Dr. Al-`Awwa added, "Under the bloody circumstances of Gaza, it is not expected that the OIC would restrict itself to mere criticism, condemnation and denunciation. These means have proven futile, useless and unhelpful when done alone, throughout the seventy years of suffering in Quds."

Urgent Demands From the OIC Summit:

In the name of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), Dr. Al-`Awwa called the OIC to at least urge its member states to take some action, including:

  1. Opening the crossing points in general, especially Rafah, to facilitate the human needs and necessities of the people of Gaza.

  2. Opening the door, without any barriers, to all relief and humane institutions that come from all countries, races and religions. There should be no restrictions to them carrying out their humane role of helping these afflicted people.

  3. Opening a branch for the OIC in Gaza so as to be in a position to watch over all affairs related to financial and material support that the OIC provides. This is so as to avoid the false claims of "financing terrorism", and to activate the role of this branch to act as an eye for the OIC in monitoring ongoing events in Gaza.

  4. Devoting monthly relief campaigns under the supervision of the OIC, along with cover from the United Nations whenever it is difficult to open the crossing points for any reason.

It is important to mention that the Islamic Summit begins today, Thursday, in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. It will be attended by the leaders of around 57 Islamic countries, and will discuss the situation in Gaza among other issues, including Islamophobia.
