Rights Groups Urge Immediate Release of Rached Ghannouchi Amid

The
\nTunisian Association for Victims of Torture on Sunday called for the immediate
\nrelease of former parliament speaker and Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi,
\nholding Tunisian authorities fully responsible for his safety following a sharp
\ndeterioration in his health and his transfer to hospital for treatment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In a
\nstatement, the Geneva-based association renewed its call for Ghannouchi\u2019s
\nrelease, describing his continued detention as a violation of international
\nlaw, particularly after he was classified by the United Nations Working Group
\non Arbitrary Detention as being held arbitrarily.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nassociation said Tunisia\u2019s failure to heed this UN position constitutes a clear
\nbreach of its international human rights obligations, including guarantees of a
\nfair trial.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

It also
\nwarned of the worsening health condition of Ghannouchi and a number of elderly
\npolitical detainees on hunger strike, urging authorities to assume full
\nresponsibility for their physical safety. Those include Chaima Issa and Jawhar
\nBen Mbarek.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Calls
\nfor Immediate Release<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nassociation called for the release of all political detainees and prisoners of
\nconscience, and for an end to what it described as judicial proceedings that do
\nnot comply with international standards. It also urged the United Nations, the
\nEuropean Union, and international human rights organizations to intervene
\nurgently to press for respect for human rights in Tunisia.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

For its
\npart, the Ennahda Movement said Ghannouchi\u2019s health had deteriorated in prison,
\nnoting that he was transferred urgently to hospital due to complications
\nrelated to chronic illnesses.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nmovement stressed that his continued detention comes despite UN opinions
\ndeeming his arrest arbitrary and calling for his immediate release, adding that
\nthe charges against him are linked to freedom of expression.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Tunisian
\nauthorities arrested Ghannouchi in April 2023, and he has since received
\nmultiple prison sentences in different cases. Ghannouchi rejects the charges
\nand considers them politically motivated.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
