Dozens
\nof parliamentarians in Mauritania held a protest on Wednesday evening in
\nNouakchott, denouncing the approval by the Knesset of the occupation
\nauthorities of a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners.
\nMembers of both the ruling party and the opposition participated in the
\ndemonstration.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Participants
\nchanted slogans rejecting the law, while the head of the parliamentary group of
\nthe ruling “Ennahda” Party, Mohamed El-Amin Oumar, stated that the
\nprotest reflects a clear condemnation of the legislation, describing it as
\nembodying the “crimes of the occupation.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly,
\nopposition MP Mohamed El-Amin Sidi Mouloud emphasized that Mauritanians, across
\npolitical affiliations, sent a unified message denouncing this measure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In the
\nsame context, 31 Mauritanian political parties issued a joint statement
\ncondemning the law, describing it as a violation of human rights and the Geneva
\nConventions, and calling on the international community, United Nations bodies,
\nand human rights organizations to take urgent action and hold the responsible
\nparties accountable.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nKnesset had approved the controversial law on Monday, stipulating that the
\ndeath penalty be carried out by hanging, under strict restrictions on
\nvisitations and communications, and allowing sentences to be issued by a
\nmajority vote without requiring unanimity.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The law
\nfaced domestic opposition as well, with some 1,200 Israeli figures\u2014including
\nNobel laureates, former military officials, and former Supreme Court
\njudges\u2014describing it as a \u201cmoral stain.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

More
\nthan 9,500 Palestinians, including children and women, are currently held in
\nthe occupation\u2019s prisons, reportedly subjected to torture, starvation, and
\nmedical neglect, leading to the deaths of dozens.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Since
\nOctober 2023, the Zionist occupation has intensified its measures against
\nPalestinian prisoners, coinciding with the war on the Gaza Strip, which has
\nresulted in more than 72,000 martyrs and 172,000 injured, the majority being
\nchildren and women.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
