General Strike and Angry Protests Across the West Bank and
\nJerusalem in Rejection of \u201cPrisoners\u2019 Execution\u201d Law<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The city
\nof Ramallah, in the central West Bank, witnessed a massive march on Wednesday
\ncondemning the Israeli Knesset\u2019s approval of a law allowing the execution of
\nPalestinian prisoners. The protest coincided with a comprehensive general
\nstrike that swept across cities in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem,
\nrejecting what has been described as a discriminatory law that has sparked
\nwidespread Palestinian and international outrage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Anger in
\nthe Palestinian Street<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The
\nmarch started from Al-Manara Square following a rally organized by institutions
\nconcerned with prisoners\u2019 affairs, including the Palestinian Prisoners\u2019 Club,
\nthe Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, and Addameer Prisoner
\nSupport and Human Rights Association. The march proceeded through the city
\nstreets with the participation of Palestinian faction leaders and religious
\nfigures, amid chants condemning occupation violations and supporting prisoners
\ninside Israeli jails.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Participants
\nraised Palestinian flags and solidarity banners, while the general strike
\nbrought daily life to a halt in response to a call by the Fatah movement.
\nShops, public and private institutions, banks, universities, and schools were
\nclosed, with the exception of essential services such as hospitals and
\nbakeries.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Streets
\nin Ramallah, home to the Palestinian presidency and government headquarters,
\nappeared nearly deserted, reflecting the scale of public anger. In occupied
\nEast Jerusalem, the strike extended across various neighborhoods, with shops
\nshuttered in major streets such as Salah al-Din, Sultan Suleiman, and Al-Zahra,
\nas well as in the Old City, accompanied by a noticeable absence of movement.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Political
\nMessages and International Pressure<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Amin
\nShoman, head of the Higher National Committee for Prisoners\u2019 Affairs, stated
\nthat the march and strike send a clear message to the international community
\ncalling for urgent intervention to thwart the law and pressure Israel\u2019s
\nfar-right government and Supreme Court to revoke it. He stressed that the
\ngrowing popular movement reflects Palestinian unity in supporting prisoners and
\nrejecting any measures targeting them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Rania
\nAl-Barghouti, mother of prisoner Mohammed Al-Barghouti, expressed deep concern
\nover her son\u2019s fate amid a lack of information about him, calling for immediate
\ninternational intervention to halt what she described as an unjust law.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

On
\nMonday, the Israeli Knesset approved a bill allowing the death penalty for
\nPalestinian prisoners by a simple majority, without requiring unanimous
\njudicial approval or a request from the prosecution. The law also applies to
\nmilitary courts and grants the Israeli Minister of Defense the right to present
\nopinions before the court.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

According
\nto the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, the law applies to 117
\nPalestinian prisoners accused of \u201cdeliberately\u201d killing Israelis. More than
\n9,500 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including children
\nand women, amid human rights reports documenting torture, medical neglect, and
\nstarvation, which have led to the deaths of several detainees.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since
\nOctober 2023, the Israeli occupation has escalated measures against Palestinian
\nprisoners, coinciding with the ongoing war on Gaza, which has resulted in more
\nthan 72,000 martyrs and 172,000 injured, most of them women and children.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
