Mass Protests in
Morocco Denounce Normalization with Occupation and Affirm Support for Palestine
Hundreds of citizens took part on
Wednesday in a protest in the city of Marrakesh in northern Morocco, in support
of Palestine and in rejection of normalization with the occupation.
The demonstration was called for
by the “Moroccan Front for the Support of Palestine and Against Normalization”
(a non-governmental organization), where participants expressed their rejection
of what they described as “provocative and normalization practices.”
Protesters chanted slogans
condemning the occupation, including: “Oh Zionist, you coward, the prisoner
shall not be humiliated,” and “The people want the fall of normalization.” They
also held banners calling for an end to normalization with the occupation,
including: “No to settling Zionists in the country.”
The protest coincided with social
media activists circulating images of a group of Haredi Jews performing
religious rituals near the historic Bab Doukkala gate in central Marrakesh,
without any official comment from the authorities.
In December 2020, Morocco and the
occupation resumed diplomatic relations under U.S. mediation, a step that was
met with rejection from segments of the public and political forces within the
kingdom. This was followed by visits by officials from the occupation to Rabat,
before they were halted with the start of the war of extermination on Gaza.
Since October 8, 2023, the
occupation has been waging a war of genocide on the Gaza Strip with U.S.
support, resulting in more than 72,000 Palestinian martyrs and over 172,000
wounded, most of them children and women, in addition to widespread destruction
affecting around 90% of the civilian infrastructure in the enclave.
