The International Union of Muslim Scholars: Advocating for the Revival of Quranic Values to Address Modern Challenges

Dr. Ali Muhammad Al-Sallabi, Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), emphasized the importance of actively reviving Quranic values to confront the challenges faced by the Islamic Ummah and the world at large. His remarks came during a press statement on the sidelines of the IUMS Board of Trustees meeting, which convenes biannually.

Key Issues Addressed in the Meeting

The Board of Trustees deliberated on issues fundamental to the Islamic Ummah, particularly those concerning Palestine, the Gaza Strip, and oppressed communities in other regions. It also discussed how to unify efforts among the Ummah, scholars, political leaders, and global advocates of justice to uphold shared principles, values, and ethics.

Promoting Quranic Teachings

Dr. Al-Sallabi highlighted the need to simplify and communicate the teachings of the Quran in an accessible and comprehensible manner. The union is focusing on enhancing performance across its committees, which include those dedicated to core principles, media, advocacy, and fatwas.

Institutional Development and Strategic Goals

The Secretary-General noted that the IUMS is entering a new phase of comprehensive institutionalization, fostering stronger relationships between the General Secretariat and its various committees. This progress strengthens the union’s ability to convey the message of Islam to future generations worldwide.

Quranic Values and Universal Justice

Dr. Al-Sallabi underscored the role of Islamic values in achieving justice, freedom, and equality—concepts deeply rooted in the Quran. He cited verses such as:

  • “There is no compulsion in religion; the truth has been made distinct from falsehood” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 256).
  • “O people, We have created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may recognize one another. Indeed, the most noble of you before Allah is the most righteous[7] among you” (Surah Al-Hujurat: 13).

A Global Call for Human Values

In conclusion, Dr. Al-Sallabi noted that the IUMS is working on a comprehensive project aimed at reviving universal human values and introducing the world to the Quran’s teachings, which advocate for freedom, justice, and human fraternity, following the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
