Lebanese Islamic and Human Rights Organizations: The Extradition of Poet Qaradawi is a Betrayal of Freedom and a Crime Against Justice, Demanding His Immediate Release

In a statement issued by a group of Islamic and human rights organizations in Lebanon, the unjustified detention of the poet and writer Abdulrahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, lasting over two weeks, has been strongly condemned.

The statement asserted that this detention stems from Qaradawi's political positions opposing political tyranny and normalization with the Zionist enemy, considering this move a blatant violation of human rights and freedom of expression.

The organizations expressed their deep concern about the Lebanese authorities' intention to extradite Qaradawi to a country requesting his handover, exposing his life to significant risks under regimes that do not uphold human rights.

They called on the Lebanese government not to involve itself in handing over Qaradawi, describing such an act as a betrayal of humanitarian and Islamic values.

The statement also noted that Qaradawi holds Turkish citizenship, and the Republic of Turkey has officially requested his repatriation, asserting its responsibility for its citizens.

Furthermore, the statement clarified that Qaradawi committed no crimes on Lebanese soil. He entered Lebanon through Beirut Airport using his Turkish passport, visited Syria, and returned legally via the Al-Masnaa border point.

Political and Legal Demands

The organizations urged the Lebanese government to release Abdulrahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi immediately, either handing him over to Turkey or deporting him to a country of his choice.

They emphasized that any delay in his release would perpetuate injustice and oppression.

The statement also warned the Lebanese government that extraditing Qaradawi could expose it to international criminal accountability for violating human rights agreements, particularly the Convention Against Torture.

The organizations affirmed their determination not to let this case pass unnoticed and pledged to cooperate with international human rights bodies to hold accountable those responsible for this violation.
