Qatar Launches
“Qur’an Teacher” Initiative in Schools to Strengthen Recitation and Religious
Identity

Al-Hashemi, Chairman of the Committee for Developing and Enhancing the Teaching
of the Holy Qur’an and the Arabic Language at the Ministry of Education and
Higher Education, and Assistant Secretary-General of the International Union of
Muslim Scholars, announced the launch of the “Qur’an Teacher” initiative in
seven schools, starting last Sunday, April 26, 2026, stressing that it is the
first of its kind across the Arab and Islamic worlds and represents a
qualitative step in advancing Qur’anic education within the school environment.
In remarks to Qatar TV,
Al-Hashemi explained that the initiative is the outcome of specialized studies
conducted by the committee, noting that the State of Qatar is at the forefront
of adopting this innovative educational model, in cooperation with the Ministry
of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, which contributed to nominating a select group of
qualified imams to take part in its implementation.

Qualitative Leap in Qur’anic Education
In this context, Al-Hashemi
stated that the selection of imams was based on precise criteria, given their
high competence, continuous Qur’anic transmission (sanad), and mastery of
recitation and Tajweed rules. He added that they underwent two training courses
to ensure full readiness before the actual launch of the initiative.
He pointed out that the first
phase will include seven schools as a pilot model, considering the scale of the
project and current circumstances. It will be implemented in a number of
government boys’ schools, in addition to one private school, with implementation
in other private schools to follow after the examination period.
Al-Hashemi affirmed that
involving imams is intended to support, not replace, Islamic education
teachers. The “Qur’an Teacher” will focus on assisting students facing
difficulties in recitation and memorization through specialized training
programs delivered during skills classes, before morning assembly, and during
school activities.
He added that the role also
extends to training teaching staff, contributing to improving the quality of
Qur’anic instruction within schools.
He further noted that
participating imams will be present in schools from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
where they will be responsible for memorization, reflection, and teaching
recitation skills, thereby strengthening students’ connection to the Holy
Qur’an in both understanding and practice.
Al-Hashemi concluded by
emphasizing that the initiative represents a strategic national project aimed
at consolidating Islamic values and strengthening linguistic and religious
identity among students, expressing hope that the experience will be expanded
in the future after evaluating the results of the pilot phase.
