Saudi Arabia and Qatar Announce Friday as the First Day of Eid
al-Fitr

Saudi
Arabia and Qatar announced on Wednesday evening that Friday, March 20, will
mark the first day of Eid al-Fitr.

In Saudi
Arabia, the Saudi Royal Court, as reported by the official news agency, stated
that the Supreme Court decided Thursday would complete the month of Ramadan
after the crescent of Shawwal could not be sighted, making Friday the start of
Eid al-Fitr.

In
Qatar, the Crescent Sighting Committee of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic
Affairs clarified in an official statement carried by the news agency that
Friday will be observed as the first day of Eid al-Fitr following the confirmed
inability to sight the Shawwal crescent.

It is
worth noting that Saudi Arabia and 11 other Arab countries declared Wednesday,
February 18, as the beginning of Ramadan for the year 1447 AH, with these
countries observing the crescent of Shawwal to determine the date of Eid. This
means these countries completed a full 30 days of Ramadan.

Meanwhile,
in Egypt and nine other Arab countries, Ramadan began on Thursday, February 19,
and the Shawwal crescent is expected to be observed on Thursday, with
astronomical predictions also indicating that Friday will likely be the first
day of Eid al-Fitr.
