IUMS Condoles the Syrian People and the Islamic Nation on the Passing of Distinguished Scholar Sheikh Sariya Abdul Kareem Al-Rifai (May Allah Have Mercy on Him)

The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) extends its heartfelt condolences to the Syrian people and the Islamic nation on the loss of the esteemed scholar, Sheikh Sariya Abdul Kareem Al-Rifai, who returned to his Lord on Monday, 6th Rajab 1446 AH (January 6, 2025), in Istanbul at the age of 77, after a prolonged illness.

A Legacy of Knowledge and Da'wah

Sheikh Sariya devoted his life to the service of knowledge, da'wah (Islamic propagation), and reform. He was a role model for scholars, a wise preacher, and a steadfast reformer. Despite the many challenges he faced, his commitment to his mission remained unwavering.

Born in 1948 in the Qanawat neighborhood of Damascus, Sheikh Sariya was raised in a family of knowledge and piety under the guidance of his father, the distinguished scholar Sheikh Abdul Kareem Al-Rifai, founder of Jama’at Zaid. From a young age, he was nurtured on the love of learning, respect for scholars, and dedication to serving others.

His Journey in Pursuit of Knowledge

Sheikh Sariya studied at the Ghurra Association Institute in Damascus and later enrolled at Al-Azhar University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Faculty of Usul al-Din (Fundamentals of Religion). His scholarly approach was characterized by a comprehensive understanding that bridged traditional Islamic sciences with contemporary disciplines.

A Preacher and Reformer

Known for his eloquence and sincerity, Sheikh Sariya began delivering sermons and leading prayers at an early age. His powerful speeches and profound teachings left a lasting impact, inspiring audiences through lessons, lectures, and educational gatherings. Despite numerous offers, he consistently declined official positions to maintain the independence of his da’wah efforts.

His Philanthropic Contributions

Sheikh Sariya was instrumental in founding several pioneering charitable initiatives, including:

  • Saving Grace Association (2003): Providing food for those in need.
  • Clothing and Medicine Project (2004–2005): Distributing new clothing and essential medications.
  • Orphan Sponsorship Project (2007): Going beyond financial support to provide comprehensive care for over 30,000 orphans.
  • Zaid Bin Thabit Center: A comprehensive educational and da’wah institution.

A Revered Scholar and a Painful Loss

Throughout his life, Sheikh Sariya dedicated himself to the causes of his ummah. He was a tireless advocate for truth, a defender of justice, and an exemplar of unwavering commitment to Islamic principles. His wisdom, insight, and boundless generosity in serving Islam made him a beacon for generations.

With his passing, the Islamic world has lost a luminary—a scholar who embodied the values of sincerity and perseverance. The IUMS extends its deepest sympathies to his family, students, scholars, and all those devoted to the service of Islam.

We pray that Allah accepts him with His mercy, grants him the highest ranks in Jannah alongside the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and bestows patience and solace upon his loved ones.

“Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.” (Al-Baqarah: 156)
