India: Launch of the “Tafheem al-Quran” App for Translating the Meanings of the Quran into Hindi
In a significant step toward promoting religious understanding and peaceful coexistence among India’s diverse communities, the Islamic organization "Sahitya Foundation" in New Delhi has launched a new app called “Tafheem al-Quran.” The app aims to translate the meanings of the Quran into the Hindi language.
This initiative seeks to build bridges between the Indian public and Quranic texts while addressing widespread misconceptions about Islam among Hindus and Muslims.
The app is based on the interpretation of the Quran by the Islamic thinker Abul A’la Maududi, a prominent figure in modern Quranic research. The translation into Hindi was completed by Naseem Ghazi Al-Falahi.
Objectives of the Hindi Translation
Saadatullah Husaini, Director of the Sahitya Foundation, explained that translating the Quran into Hindi and launching the app serve two primary goals:
- Conveying the complete message of the Quran to Hindi-speaking Muslims, enabling them to understand the Quran’s objectives and messages clearly.
- Allowing non-Muslims in India to understand the teachings of the Quran directly, helping them learn about its content beyond misconceptions that have fueled the rise of Islamophobia.
Printed Translation
Husaini highlighted that the multi-language Quran translation project had been in development, noting that the Hindi translation of the Quran was completed in six volumes and officially launched through the app.
Efforts of Naseem Ghazi Al-Falahi
Translator Naseem Ghazi Al-Falahi shared insights about the process, mentioning that he initially worked on translating Maulana Farooq’s Urdu interpretation into Hindi under the title “Easy Translation” before undertaking the translation of Maududi’s work.
The translation of “Tafheem al-Quran” into Hindi spanned 12 years, with two years dedicated to each volume. Al-Falahi emphasized the importance of translating the Quran into Hindi as it is the most widely spoken language among both Muslims and Hindus in India.
Addressing Misconceptions
Al-Falahi noted that the primary objective of the translation is to correct misconceptions that Hindus have about Islam and the Quran, as addressed by Maududi in his interpretation.
The app allows users to read the translation on computers and mobile devices and listen to audio explanations for a deeper understanding.
Advanced Features and Accessibility
The app is available for free on Android and Apple platforms and features advanced search functions, enabling users to easily locate verses, pages, words, and their meanings.
Positive Impact
Al-Falahi concluded by stating that they have received reports from various regions in India highlighting the app’s impact. Many have benefited from the translation, gaining a clearer understanding of the Quran’s meanings.
