Islamic Authority in Austria Rejects All Forms of Extremism,
Calls for Strengthening Social Cohesion
The
Islamic Authority in Austria has reaffirmed its unequivocal rejection of all
forms of extremism, stressing that the exploitation of religion to justify
violence or spread hatred directly contradicts its core principles of
compassion, coexistence, and responsibility.
The
Authority called for adopting a societal approach based on avoiding
generalization, promoting mutual understanding, and expanding cooperation among
all segments of society, describing this as a fundamental pillar in confronting
extremism and limiting its impact.
It also
warned that conflating religion with extremism not only distorts religious
values but also deepens societal divisions and fuels extremist narratives that
seek to undermine stability.
In its
concluding remarks, the Authority emphasized that addressing these challenges
requires rational dialogue and comprehensive institutional and community
cooperation, in a way that strengthens social cohesion and resilience in the
face of growing challenges.
This
position comes in parallel with findings from the 2025 Constitutional
Protection Report, issued by the Austrian Ministry of Interior on May 4, 2026,
which revealed a notable rise in indicators of extremism within Austrian
society, particularly among far-right groups, as well as religiously motivated
extremism, highlighting increasing challenges to security and social stability.
This
development also coincides with a widening public debate on the relationship
between religion and extremism, and the negative consequences of conflating the
two on social cohesion, alongside renewed emphasis on the need to clearly
distinguish between authentic religious values and extremist practices that
contradict them.
