Sudan: 43 killed in airstrike on Khartoum market

الرابط المختصر :

KHARTOUM, Sudan: A devastating airstrike on a marketplace in Khartoum resulted in the death of 43 individuals on Sunday, as reported by a health organization.

The Doctors Syndicate of Sudan revealed in a statement that the bombing, which targeted the open-air market in the Mayo district of South Khartoum, also injured 55 people.

Previously, the activist group, The Emergency Room, had estimated a death toll of 40 from the incident.

The responsible party for the airstrike remains unidentified.

This violent event occurs amidst intense conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in the city's heart.

The RSF has pointed fingers at the army for the Mayo district airstrike. However, the army refuted these claims, labeling them as "deceptive" and "baseless". They asserted in an official statement that their operations target only legitimate military sites, ensuring adherence to international humanitarian standards and avoiding civilian casualties.

Local medical professionals have recorded over 3,000 civilian deaths and numerous injuries from the ongoing strife between the military and the RSF since April.

Despite several attempts at establishing a ceasefire through mediation by Saudi and US representatives, the nation's unrest continues unabated.
