IUMS Calls for Unified Sermon to Condemn Desecration of Holy Quran and Protect Religious Sanctities

The esteemed Scholars, preachers, and advocates, ministers and officials of the Ministries of Endowments and Mosques, and scientific and Islamic institutions worldwide,

Subject: An invitation to all Muslim scholars to dedicate the Friday sermon of Dhu Al-Hijjah 19, 1444 AH, corresponding to July 7, 2023, to condemn the burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden and to protect our sanctities in Al-Aqsa Mosque and Palestine.

Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.

The Global Union of Muslim Scholars presents you with the highest expressions of appreciation and respect, hoping you are well in your religion and worldly affairs.

As you may know, a copy of the Holy Quran was once again burnt in Sweden by an extremist in front of the Stockholm mosque on the first day of Eid Al-Adha under the protection of the Swedish police. This detestable and provocative criminal act contradicts all values and morals, tolerance values, and respect for the religious sanctities of others.

At the same time, criminal occupiers tore up the Quran in some mosques of occupied Palestine and desecrated our first Qibla. Before this, there were offensive cartoons. Thus, all our sanctities have been violated without an effective response from the governments and people.

In view of all this, the scholars (heirs of the prophets) must play their role in comprehensive wise awareness, preaching, and protecting the constants and sanctities of Islam.

Therefore, the Global Union of Muslim Scholars invites you to the following:

1- Dedicate next Friday sermon on Dhu Al-Hijjah 19, 1444 AH, corresponding to July 7, 2023, to condemn these atrocious acts and abhorrent crimes and to disclose our absolute rejection of any behavior targeting our great sanctities.

2- Educate Muslims about their obligations towards their religion and their first Qibla.

3- Call on Islamic governments to take practical measures such as fair diplomatic and economic boycotts of those who dare to commit such crimes against nearly two billion people, according to a collective decision of Muslim leaders and a well-thought-out plan agreed upon by these countries.

4- Urge Islamic governments to legislate a law that criminalizes contempt of religions, in cooperation with human rights organizations, and then raise the law to the United Nations to issue a law that criminalizes aggression against religions, considering that it violates international security and peace.

5- Encourage the Muslim minority to act, move, demonstrate peacefully, resort to justice, and cooperate with justice and fairness institutions.

We hope that all the esteemed Ministries of Endowments, Islamic institutions, and centers, and the honorable preachers will respond to this call with a spirit of unity and solidarity to be a strong voice expressing our Islamic and humanitarian values and contribute to preventing the repetition of these insults.

May you remain under God's care and protection,
Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.

Dr. Ali Al Qaradaghi - Secretary General
Dr. Salem Saqaf Al Jafari - President
