IUMS Condemns Savage Attack in Annecy, Calls for Counterterrorism and Promoting Social Harmony

Doha: June 9, 2023

The International Union of Muslim Scholars vehemently condemns the brutal attack that took place in the city of Annecy, eastern France, resulting in the injury of four children and two adults.

In light of this, the esteemed Secretary-General of the Union emphasizes the following points:

Firstly, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the swift recovery of the injured. We firmly assert that these acts are both abhorrent and criminal, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators.

Secondly, the targeting of innocent children and ordinary individuals in such cowardly and malicious attacks flagrantly violates all sacred principles, universal human values, and undermines the safety and stability of communities. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the international community to address these acts of terrorism with resolute and urgent measures. Efforts must be made to prevent the recurrence of such heinous crimes, while promoting peaceful coexistence and fostering tolerance among diverse communities.

Thirdly, we reiterate that Islam is a religion of mercy, one that places the utmost emphasis on safeguarding human life, upholding human rights, and promoting compassion and benevolence. No other religion, system, law, or code of conduct exhibits the same profound concern for the well-being and dignity of humanity. Consequently, we strongly urge the continuous rejection of hate speech and violence in all its forms, irrespective of its origin, source, or motivation. It is imperative to respect sacred symbols and religious icons, while refraining from fostering animosity through derogatory remarks or actions towards any faith.

In conclusion, we assert that these appalling crimes against children are inconceivable acts committed by individuals devoid of humanity.

Dr. Ali Al-Qaradaghi

Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars
