Al-Sallabi: "Algerian Revolution... A People's Epic Inspiring the Free on the Path to Freedom and Independence"
In an article commemorating the anniversary of Algeria's War of Independence, Sheikh Dr. Ali Muhammad Al-Sallabi, Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, emphasized that the Algerian people’s struggle and resilience against French colonialism remains a model of independence movements, inspiring oppressed peoples, particularly the Palestinian people.
Al-Sallabi noted that Algerian resistance began with the arrival of the French army on Algeria’s shores in 1830, persisting for decades through a series of popular uprisings despite France's oppressive policies, such as stripping Algerians of their land, plundering resources, and suppressing the population by all means.
He explained that France spared no effort in attempting to "Frenchify" the Algerian people and erode their Islamic identity. However, Algerians held firm, expressing their commitment to their identity and dignity through powerful messages.
Al-Sallabi highlighted the significance of May 8, 1945, when 45,000 Algerians were killed by French forces, which convinced the Algerian people that armed struggle was the only path to freedom.
He continued, stating that this renewed awareness led to the outbreak of the Great War of Independence in 1954, led by the National Liberation Front (FLN). The FLN courageously faced French oppression despite the harsh tactics used to suppress the revolution. Yet, the unwavering determination and sacrifices of the Algerian people eventually led to Algeria’s independence on July 5, 1962, following difficult negotiations with the French colonizers.
In conclusion, Sheikh Al-Sallabi noted that the Algerian revolution was rooted in profound faith in Allah, spiritual strength from Islamic teachings, and the resilience of the people, who sacrificed over one million martyrs during the revolution and more than five million since the start of colonization.
He prayed for victory for all Muslim nations seeking freedom, especially Palestine.
For further details, Dr. Al-Sallabi has recorded a video titled: "The Algerian People’s Revolution Against French Occupation: Inspiring Lessons for the Palestinian People," exploring key lessons from the Algerian struggle and calling for the spirit of resistance and steadfastness to be emulated.
