The International Union of Muslim Scholars Calls for Supporting the Syrian People, Rejecting Interventions, and Upholding Justice and Tolerance to Achieve Stability (Statement)

The International Union of Muslim Scholars reaffirms its unwavering support for the righteous Syrian people. It urges the global community to stand with them, abstain from interfering in their internal affairs, and recognizes their ability to manage their own affairs. The Union condemns any attempts to incite sectarian strife or other forms of division.

The Union calls upon the leadership of the new government to continue adhering to justice, tolerance, and addressing sectarianism with a spirit of unity and brotherhood.

The Union appeals to the Islamic Ummah—leaders, scholars, and thinkers—to exert all possible efforts, whether through intellectual, financial, political, or media support, to help achieve security, stability, and comprehensive development for a prosperous Syria.

Text of the Statement:

The International Union of Muslim Scholars is closely monitoring developments in Syria with utmost seriousness and commitment to ensuring the success of the goals of the revolution led by the great Syrian people. These people have endured decades of oppression, persecution, killing, destruction, and displacement for over sixty years. By the grace of Allah, the tyranny has been removed, and the oppressor who showed no remorse and thrived on the bloodshed of hundreds of thousands and the destruction of infrastructure has been overthrown.

Today, Allah has granted the Syrian people deliverance from the Pharaoh of Syria, his allies, and his regime. It is incumbent upon them and all of us to thank Allah Almighty:

“So the people who did wrong were eliminated. And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” [Surah Al-An’am: 45].

The Union observes that those who remained silent about the tyranny of the Syrian Pharaoh—and even supported him in his oppression—are now trying to present themselves as stakeholders in this cause, setting conditions and restrictions. Some of those who supported the tyrant are even attempting to stir sectarian strife and other forms of discord. This is condemned and unacceptable.

In contrast, the actions of the revolutionary leaders and the new government from the moment of their victory have been characterized by wisdom, justice, tolerance, and a steadfast commitment to ensuring that Syria belongs to all Syrians.

Given the current situation, the Union emphasizes the following:

1. Full Support for the Syrian People:
The Union reaffirms its complete support for the Syrian people and their leadership.

2. A Call for Solidarity:
The Union calls upon the Islamic Ummah—leaders, scholars, and communities—to stand with the Syrian people with all available resources: material, intellectual, humanitarian, and otherwise. The Syrian people have suffered greatly for decades, and millions remain displaced and in dire need of support. This is a religious and moral obligation of the highest priority.

3. Condemnation of Divisive Rhetoric:
The Union denounces the statements made by some countries or individuals that incite hatred, sectarianism, or ethnic discord. Such rhetoric harms the unity of the Islamic Ummah, which desperately needs to heal wounds and work towards unity and reconciliation. Such divisive statements only fuel animosity and provoke irresponsible reactions, and must therefore be rejected and condemned.

4. A Call for Justice and Vigilance:
The Union urges the new Syrian leadership to continue prioritizing justice, tolerance, and goodwill while remaining vigilant against the schemes of adversaries and remnants of the deep state. The Islamic framework of governance is based on a balance between justice and firmness in upholding truth, alongside tolerance and kindness where appropriate.

5. Addressing Sectarianism:
The malignant sectarianism of recent decades has poisoned the atmosphere, fueling hatred, vendettas, and divisions. In some cases, it has even led to the emergence of extremist ideologies targeting the Ahlul-Bayt (the Prophet's noble family). The Union calls upon the Ummah as a whole to adopt moderation and balance, treating all groups and sects with justice and kindness in accordance with Allah’s words:

“And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” [Surah Al-Ma’idah: 8].

“And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.” [Surah Fatir: 18].

We must collectively strive to purge our communities of hatred, vengeance, and prejudice, guiding our Ummah away from selfish desires and toward complete servitude to Allah Almighty.

“And say, ‘Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do.’” [Surah At-Tawbah: 105].

Sincerely,
