The Family of Abdul Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi Expresses Deep Concern Over His Continued Detention in the UAE Without Contact With His Family or Lawyer

The family of poet and writer Abdul Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi issued a press statement on January 15, 2025, expressing their deep concern and profound dismay over his continued detention in the United Arab Emirates without being allowed to communicate with his lawyer or family members, including his young daughters.

In their statement, the family noted that Abdul Rahman Yusuf has been in total isolation since losing contact with his Lebanese lawyer, Mr. Mohammad Salah, after his departure on a private Emirati plane. Since then, no information about him has been received.

The family clarified that Abdul Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi is not accused of committing any crime in the UAE. The only requirement is for him to undergo an inquiry by the Public Prosecution, which, according to Emirati law, must take place within 48 hours of detention.

However, eight days have passed since his detention, during which he has not been allowed to communicate with his lawyer or family. This constitutes a flagrant violation of both local and international laws.

The family also expressed grave concern over circulating rumors about his possible torture, deteriorating health, and even death. They emphasized their inability to confirm or deny these reports due to the lack of communication.

The family called on Emirati authorities to release him immediately or at least allow him to contact his lawyer and family, ensure that he receives all his legal rights, and provide clear assurances about his physical and psychological safety.

Additionally, the family urged human rights organizations, civil society groups, and international bodies to intervene urgently and exert pressure on the Emirati authorities to ensure Abdul Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi's safety. They demanded his legal rights be respected and his safe return to his family as soon as possible.

It is worth noting that Lebanese authorities detained Sheikh Al-Qaradawi upon his exit from Syria following a visit after the liberation of Damascus from the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. This detention occurred after Lebanon received demands from Egypt and the UAE to extradite him for trials in cases widely regarded by human rights organizations as politically motivated.
